Couple Arrested & Handcuffed For Trafficking Chocolate!

Two raw foodists, Ron and Nadine of Living Libations, were arrested, jailed and accused of trafficking hashish (which was just raw, homemade chocolate) while traveling from Canada to the U.S.

Not only that, but the couple were handcuffed to chairs and their six-month-old baby boy was forcibly taken from them while they were interrogated for hours, all because of their suspcious-looking package of chocolate, which was falsely identifed using an unreliable on-the-spot drug testing kit.

Hats off to my friend Mike Adams of Natural News for alerting many of us to this apalling incident.

Read Mike's article now to get details about the startling arrest, how charges were finally dropped but no apology offered and how, with legal help, bona fide testing revealed that the so-called "hashish" was just chococlate.

Twitter Advice from Business Week's Arik Hesseldahl

Here's some more Twitter advice from Arik Hesseldahl, Business Week senior technology writer and columnist:

1. Twitter from your iPhone or Blackberry, but do so using an application like Twitterific, and not via SMS, as the SMS messages can give you a case of bill-shock.

2. Try Twitpic.com for sending pictures that your Twitter friends -- and other people, it should be noted -- can see.

Twitter Tips for Newbies from David Mathison of Be the Media

This is a follow-up to yesterday's post, where experts on my Gab With the Gurus Radio Show promised to provide help to Twitter newbies.

1. 1. Sign up and search for people you know, or use the tool to upload select members of your address book.
2. 2. Follow a few people to get the hang of the service and to see if their messages resonate with you.

Tips for Twitter Newbies From Gedeon Maheux Of Iconfactory

Here are some suggestions from Gedeon Maheux, co-founder of Iconfactory on how best to use Twitter:

1. Find and make friends. Twitter doesn't reach its full potential until you start following people that have similar interests as you. Be those family or real life friends, they all make Twitter more compelling.

2. Get off the web. The Twitter website is one of the worst ways to interact with the service. Try out a desktop or mobile application like Twitterrific and see how it can make sending and receiving tweets quicker, easier and more fun.

3. Stick with it. At first, Tweeting may seem pointless, but once you make more friends and start following people you are really interested in, its value will become apparent very quickly. The key is not to give up in the early stages because once you hit the Twitter tipping point, you'll suddenly "get it" and it will all make sense.

Tips for Twitter Newbies From Shel Israel

On my Gab With the Gurus Radio Show today, the five social networking experts I interviewed agreed to give Tips for you Twitter newbies out there.

Here are some pointers from social media observer Shel Israel, author of Naked Conversations and of the upcoming Twitterville:

1. Show yourself. Scroll through some pages and see what catches your eye. Chances are good that it will be the avatars. Personally, I like to have conversations with real people so I like to see real photos, not cartoons or the Twitterville place keeper. If you have a blog or Web site, link to it. Under your bio, say something about what you are really about. Saying your location is on iPhone is overused and unhelpful to someone deciding to follow you or not.

2. Read first.When I check out a new Tweeter, I read his or her most recent posts. If one interests me, I'll look further. If none does, I'm gone. My advice is to start by reading what others have to say and get a sense of the rhythm of Twitterville conversations before you join in. Wait until you have something useful or interesting to add to the conversation.

3. Celebrities don't count. You can always start by getting followed by a few celebrity Tweeters like Scoble, Calacanis and Loic. But they give you no credibility at all because they simply follow everyone. Their purpose is to be a new media star and it works well for them. But is that what you want from Twitterville? Those of us who have been around for a while see no value in being listed at as Followers, because they follow everyone.

Sudoko on the Elliptical? By JJ Virgin

Allow me to be the Jeff Foxworthy of Fitness for a moment here and share some of the craziest things I have (really!) seen at the gym. 

You know you aren't working out hard enough when you are reading a NOVEL on the bike.... You know you aren't working out hard enough when you can carry on a conversation on your cellphone on the treadmill(and your listener has no clue!)... You know you aren't working out hard enough when you don't even break a sweat.

And finally you know you aren't working out hard enough if you are doing a Sudoko puzzle on the Elliptical trainer (saw that one at the Four Seasons Sports Club in Irving, Texas). 

I call this lazy cardio. To me, it is probably even worse than doing nothing because you trick yourself into thinking that you have worked out so you "deserve" that treat.  If you can talk while you are pushing it at the gym, you need to push harder. If you aren't breaking a sweat, crank it up.  And as far as your cellphone goes, put it away, far away!

Ode to the Internet Day: Third Annual One Web Day on Monday, Sept. 22

We celebrate Earth Day. So why not pay tribute to the Internet? That's the thinking behind One Web Day, the third of which takes place Monday, Sept. 22 with activities around the world.

An event honoring the World Wide Web makes sense. For most of us, the Internet is an integral part of our lives, transforming the way we do business, enabling us to reach thousands, if not millions, with our helpful messages, etc. (Actually, in my mind, the Internet may play too big a role to many of us, myself included.)

Actually, "peoples' lives now are as dependent on the Internet as they are on the basics like roads, energy supplies and running water," claims University of Michigan law professor Susan Crawford, One Web Day's founder.

"We can no longer take that for granted and we must advocate for the Internet politically, and support its vitality personally," she insists, noting that this year's theme is online participation in democracy.
